Journal History

As one of the oldest and largest faculties at the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Imam Bonjol Padang—now known as the State Islamic University of Imam Bonjol Padang, the Faculty of Islamic Education (Tarbiyah) and Teacher Training has been publishing the scientific journal Al-Ta'lim: Journal of Educational and Islamic Studies since 1994. The first edition, published in the October-December 1994 period, was managed by Syafrizal, MS, Dra. Rosnida Abdullah, Drs. Hafni Ladjid, and led by Drs. Syakirman M. Noor, MA. Drs. Armen Mukhtar served as co-editor, while Drs. Ilman Nasution acted as the Secretary. Other editorial members included Drs. M. Basyiruddin Usman, M.Pd., Drs. Em Dasril, Dra. Hallen A, M.Pd., Dra. Mimi Suharti M., Drs. Zulfahmi HB, M.Hum., Drs. Hadeli, MA., Drs. Zainal Asril, Dra. Idda Trisna, Drs. Rusli, Yuhardi, S.Pd., and Besral, S.Pd.

The journal first received an accreditation rating of "C" in 2000, as stated in the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education, Number 69/DIKTI/Kep/2000, dated May 21, 2000. Due to the hard work and dedication of the editorial team, including Dr. Syamzul Nizar, MA, and Drs. Ilman Nasution as Editor-in-Chief and Assistant Editor-in-Chief, the journal achieved an accreditation rating of "B" in 2002, as stated in the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education, Number 34/DIKTI/Kep/2002, dated March 6, 2002. However, the journal was temporarily suspended for about three years for printing due to several factors, including a lack of financial support, the Editor-in-Chief moving to another university, and some editorial members pursuing postgraduate studies.

In 2012, the Dean appointed Dr. Martin Kustati, M.Pd., and Zulvia Trinova, S.Ag., M.Pd. as the new Editor-in-Chief and Assistant Editor-in-Chief, with updated editorial members and reviewers, as outlined in Decree In.5/PP/00.9/4/4487.a/2012. They were tasked with reviving Al-Ta'lim. Dr. Martin Kustati, M.Pd. was subsequently sent to participate in a workshop on Management and Editing of Scientific Journals at Klub Butik Resort, Batu, Malang. This national workshop aimed to improve the quality of journals to meet the required accreditation standards. As a result, Al-Ta'lim was re-published with ISSN 1410-7546 in 2012, in Volume 19, Number 1.

Since then, the journal has continued to grow. In 2014, Al-Ta'lim adopted the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. Although the system is still in development, the journal began receiving submissions from contributors both locally and internationally. In fact, seven out of nine articles published in the latest edition came from universities outside the State Islamic Institute Imam Bonjol Padang.

Volume 21, Number 1, 2014, marked the transition of the journal to a fully online publication. In this edition, articles were accepted in Indonesian, English, or Arabic. To align with the journal's vision, starting from Volume 21, Number 2, 2014, the editorial team decided to accept articles in Arabic as well.

Al-Ta'lim received accreditation from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia with accreditation number 51/E/KPT/2017 on December 4, 2017, following changes to the previous decree (Number 48a/KPT/2017) on October 30, 2017. In 2022, the journal underwent a re-evaluation and received a new accreditation decree 105/E/KPT/2022.

During this process, the journal underwent several changes in its template, with the most recent template published in Volume 23, Number 2, 2016.

In accordance with the Rector's Decree of State Islamic University Imam Bonjol regarding BLU Costs, Number 1453 of 2021, authors are required to pay an Article Processing Fee (APC) of IDR 1,500,000 per article. Payments should be made to the UIN IB BLU account at BSI (7322022225) or Bank Nagari (21090101000053).
